I first experimented with nudity in March 2018, returning again to the bathroom in my apartment. Counting Robert Mapplethorpe and Steven Meisel as two of my biggest photographic inspirations, I am drawn to how the lines and contours of nude portraits often evoke something other than a person’s body. The muscle of a man’s bare back in Mapplethorpe’s work or light catching the taut leg of a supermodel in Meisel’s make me think of sand dunes, rivers, terrain—things natural but not human. Feather & Spangle mixes strategic partial nudity with a sequin cocktail dress, a bolt of feathers, and loosely draped silk robe, as well as attitudes that pivot between vulnerability and cheekiness.
